Can you eat sprouts while pregnant?
Not advisedAvoid raw sprouts during pregnancy, including alfalfa, clover, radish and mung bean. Bacteria get inside the seed itself, so washing cannot fix them; thorough cooking can.
Why
Sprouts are the one vegetable with their own avoid rule: the warm, humid conditions that sprout a seed are also ideal for growing Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria, and because the bacteria can live inside the seed, no amount of rinsing helps. The CDC tells pregnant women to skip raw and lightly cooked sprouts, and FDA pregnancy guidance says the same. Cooked until steaming hot, as in a proper stir-fry or a simmered soup, sprouts are back to safe.
Safer alternatives
- Shredded cabbage or carrot for raw crunch on sandwiches
- Thinly sliced cucumber and romaine
- Bean sprouts stir-fried until steaming hot

Frequently asked questions
What about the bean sprouts in pho or pad thai?
Sprouts served raw on top, as pho garnish usually is, follow the raw sprout rule: skip them or stir them into broth that is still truly boiling hot for a couple of minutes. In pad thai, ask for the sprouts wok-cooked with the dish rather than tossed in raw at the end.
Are microgreens the same as sprouts?
No: microgreens are grown in soil or mats, harvested above the root with scissors, and do not carry the same inside-the-seed contamination pattern. Wash them like any salad green and they are a good stand-in for raw sprouts.
Do home-grown sprouts avoid the problem?
Unfortunately not, the contamination usually arrives on the seed before it ever reaches your jar. Home sprouting has caused its own outbreaks, so pregnancy is the season to pause the sprouting kit or cook everything it produces.
